Watch flip margin calculator

A flip is only a flip if the margin is positive after every cost that actually left your account. This calculator runs the whole chain, in the order the money leaves.

The chain, in order

  1. Landed cost = purchase price + buyer's premium + shipping and insurance + duty + service and parts. The buyer's premium is a percentage of the hammer, so it has to be applied before you add the flat costs.
  2. Net proceeds = sale price minus the platform fee. If the buyer paid shipping and the platform charges its percentage on that too, include it in the base.
  3. Margin = net proceeds minus landed cost.
  4. Margin on cost = margin divided by landed cost. This is the number worth comparing between deals, because a 500 margin on a 2,000 watch is a different business from a 500 margin on a 9,000 watch.

The mistake the calculator exists to catch

Pricing the deal at the hammer and the profit at the sale price. In the defaults above the gap between purchase price and sale price is 2,200, and the real margin is far smaller than that. That gap was never the profit.
